Chester: England's Most Haunted City

New Life and Old

Hooded monk, ChesterIn 1939, Mrs W was expecting her first child and moved with her mother and sister into an oak-beamed house in Chester's Watergate Row. As she sat alone one evening, feeling sick and sorry for herself, she felt a strange, cold wind envelop the room.

In the draughty old house, she initially thought nothing of it, until she turned towards the door. There, standing in the doorway, was the silent figure of a monk, with the hooded cowl of his dark woollen habit drawn up to hide his face. He seemed to smile at her. But before the pregnant woman could speak, the ghostly monk simply vanished into thin air.

A week later, Mrs W saw the spectre again and told her mother about the experience. To her surprise, her mother told her that she too had seen the monk's ghost - standing on the upstairs landing just outside her daughter's door.
