Below are some tips to ensure that the meal goes smoothly whether as the host or as a guest.

Hosting a Dinner Party: -

  • A good host will always ensure that the guest will not want for anything and that their glass is never empty
  • Try to control the flow of conversation make sure no-one drones on and on and ensure that all guests are included in the conversation
  • Be relaxed and friendly at all times. A relaxed host = happy guests

Guest at a Dinner Party: -

  • If you have any special dietary conditions then let your host know well in advance so that they can prepare.
  • Be attentative to the host and other guests. Avoid talking too much about a particular subject unless specifically asked
  • Tear of small pieces of bread and butter each piece before you eat it
  • Don't fidget or play with your cutlery
  • Place your napkin on your lap when you sit down and if you do have to leave the table place your napkin to the left of your plate, not on your chair
  • If you are in a buffet situation do not overload your plate
  • Compliment the host but keep it subtle and understated to avoid sounding insincere
  • When you are finished do not push your plate away or tilt back on your chair
  • Enjoy yourself

There are a whole host of dining etiquette hints and tips that are not covered here. Do not worry too much as that may spoil the enjoyment of the evening. Just relax and treat others how you would like to be treated.
